Research Trimester on Dynamical Systems

4 February 2002 - 26 April 2002

Aims

The primary goal of this trimester is to provide a state of the art description of the subject accessible both to young mathematicians wishing to do research in this area and to mathematicians and scientists from other disciplines interested in learning some of the most recent developments in the field.

The main purposes of this special trimester are: to train young researchers (especially PhD students and PostDocs) interested in learning the most recent developments in dynamical systems;

to present the current state of the subject and some of its new applications to specialists in dynamical systems (as well as to mathematicians or scientists from other disciplines);

to discuss major open problems;

to serve as an effective meeting ground for mathematicians in all stages of their careers, from experts to graduate students.

Research Directions

Topics covered The following broad areas will be covered: non-uniformly and partially hyperbolic systems, quasiperiodic orbits, holomorphic dynamics and foliations, interaction between dynamical systems and biology, interaction between dynamical systems and physics (including celestial mechanics)

There will be four types of lecture series catering to the different possible audiences: - in-depth courses (10-12 hours) - minicourses (5-6 hours) - survey lectures (2 hours) - research talks (1 hour)

Courses and minicourses will be offered by leading experts. Workshops and research meetings will be organized on the spot according to the interests of participants and will be announced later.
