seminar: Intermittent behaviour of the stochastic Burgers equations

speaker: Martin Hairer (The University of Warwick)

abstract: We consider the one-dimensional Burgers equation perturbed by a weak linear instability and weak additive noise. It is shown that in this regime its dynamics is well aproximated by that of a finite-dimensional SDE. It turns out that with a suitable choice of parameters, there is a noise threshold above which the solutions to the finite-dimensional SDE converge to 0 exponentially fast. Around the threshold, the solution shows intermittent behaviour. In particular, even though its expected value decays to 0, the solution does not converge to 0 almost surely.
