Many-body theory of inhomogeneous superfluids

seminar: Superconductivity in the presence of a Zeeman term

speaker: Peter Fulde (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft)

abstract: In a tutorial lecture it is shown what the effect of a Zeeman term is on the superconducting state. In particular it is demonstrated that for a certain range of the applied field the superconductor can take advantage of the Zeeman energy by going over into an inhomogeneous state. However that requires certain condictions to be satisfied such as a mean free path which is larger than the coherence length. Various aspects of the inhomogenieous superconducting state are discussed in a simple and transparent way.
