abstract: Rate-independent evolution is by nature non-smooth. This fact motivates the current quest for suitable notions of weak solvability. Energetic formulations have proved to be powerful analytical tools but fail to effectively describe locally stable situations. Time-reparametrizations and vanishing viscosity techniques have hence emerged as promising paradigms. I shall contribute to this discussion by presenting a novel variational approach based on a maximal dissipation criterion.
