Singularities in nonlinear evolution phenomena and applications

Almgren's Q-valued functions revisited

speaker: Camillo De Lellis (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton)

abstract: Q-valued functions have been introduced by Almgren at the end of the seventies in order to study branching phenomena of minimal surfaces in codimension > 1. Almost 15 of Almgren's 1000 pages work, his "Big regularity paper", deals with Q-valued functions which minimize a suitable generalization of the Dirichlet energy. In a recent joint work with Emanuele Spadaro we revisit Almgren's theory, providing - much shorter versions of his proofs. - an alternative (intrinsic) approach to some of them - an improved estimate of the singular set on 2d domains.
