abstract: In this conference the contribution of Gabrio Piola to continuum mechanics will be examined. Though he was with no doubt a skilled mathematician and a good mechanician, within the international scientific community little is commonly known about his papers, mainly because a large part of the Italian school of mechanics was isolated in the first half of the XIXth century. The most important papers by Piola on continuum mechanics will be examined and commented upon, and some comparisons will be made with his contemporaries Cauchy, Poisson and Kirchhoff.
