I review the theoretical models of the Josephson arrays that form logical qubits protected from all local noises, discuss experimental constraints on their designs and the challenges of their implementation. I will argue that the optimal design is based on the hierarchical construction and present the results of their numerical simulations. I will also present the results of the measurements of several optimized array designs performed by Rutgers group in different setups. These results show that quantum fluctuations protect the resulting qubit from the effect of the static noise in a full agreement with the theoretical predictions. This demonstrates that the parameter scattering of the Josephson junctions available experimentally is sufficiently small to provide us with the topologically protected arrays.
