**abstract:**
Let \(Q\) denote a central extension of a free abelian group by another free abelian group, both of finite rank. In this talk we describe the topology of the spaces of homomorphisms \(\mathrm{Hom}(Q, U(m))\) and the associated moduli spaces \(\mathrm{Rep}(Q,U(m))\) where \(U(m)\) is the group of \(m\) by \(m\) unitary matrices.
