Groups actions on surfaces

abstract: In a joint work with Aaron Brown and Zhiren Wang we show that any action of a lattice in \(SL(n,\mathbb R)\) on a manifold of dimension n-2 preserves a measure. This in combination with a result by Franks and Handel shows that there are no nontrivial action of \(SL(n,\mathbb Z)\) on surfaces if \(n\geq 4\). In the talk we shall describe these results and ongoing directions of research along these lines.
