abstract: Perspective, or "Kunst des Augenmess", as understood by the Nuremberg practitioners is a technique which is to be situated somewhere between practical geometry and practical optics (in the sense of al-Farabi's De scientiis). In the 16th century Nuremberg Kunstbücher, perspective is described as a construction depending on an eyepoint in which straight lines are gathering. The pertaining diagrams are close to those illustrating surveying techniques in practical geometry, especially what the Italians call "arte di misurare con la vista" ou "arte di misurare a occhio", which includes methods of measuring at a distance, like measuring the height of a tower sitated on the other side of a river. The links between this art of measuring and perspective are to be further explored.
