The Scientific Revolutions of the 16th and 17th Centuries

seminar: The relationships between geometry and mechanics at the mid of the seventeenth century: an overview

speaker: Niccolò Guicciardini (Università di Bergamo)

abstract: Newton defined the relationship between geometry and mechanics in a distinctively original, but still not well-understood, way. In this paper I will attempt an overview of some of the sources that Newton might have had in mind when he formulated his project of grounding geometry on “mechanical practice”. The aim of my very broad outline is to show that further research along these lines might be fruitful in shedding light on a number of exigencies that motivated Newton’s mathematical natural philosophy
