Network Modulation & Control

speaker: Gemunu Gunaratne (University of Houston)

abstract: From studies on model networks, we find that the inclusion of two nodes within a network significantly modulates the effect of one node on another, an effect we refer to as Network Modulation. Furthermore, network modulation is found to depend on the overall stability of the network. Using this observation, we argue that the effect of externally modifying the level of a few nodes in a network is approximately (multi-) linear. The assertion is verified using the expression levels of a double knockout mutant in the oxygen-deprivation network of E.coli. This near linearity of the network response to external perturbations can be used to design a model-free feedback-control algorithm for networks, which has been verified in an experiment on a nonlinear electrical network.
