Modeling, analysis, and control of multi-agent systems across scales

Kinetic models for cell migration in heterogenous environments

speaker: Martina Conte (Politecnico di Torino)

abstract: Kinetic equations have been widely used in the modeling of multi-agent systems, allow- ing for exploring the large scale aggregate trends that emerge from microscopic interactions.

These descriptions have been successfully applied to real world phenomena among which applications to the study of cell mechanisms, such as cell movements or cell response to multi-cue environments, can be counted. Cells behaviors, in fact, are well-described across different scales: from the individual level, where stochastic mechanism of cell re-orientation can be included, to the corresponding kinetic level for cell collective motion, and, then, up to the aggregate macroscopic description. In this talk, we will discuss different kinetic and non-local models for cell migration, describing their multi-scale characteristics and their derivation. The model outcomes can be compared with experimental results and, in part,

explain experimental observations at various scales, showing the models’ potential applica- bility.
