seminar: Apollonius’ Inclinationes in early modern mathematics: an overview

speaker: Aldo Brigaglia (Università di Palermo)

abstract: Viete clearly perceived the importance of Apollonius’ lost book on Inclinationes to test the effectiveness of new algebraic methods versus older analytical ones. During the XVII century many mathematicians (among them we may cite Ghetaldi, Renaldini, Descartes, Newton, …) were engaged in the solution of the problems of Apollonius, using algebraic or geometrical methods. I will give an overview of these different methods, pointing out the different approaches of Descartes and Newton.
