The Scientific Revolutions of the 16th and 17th Centuries

course: Mechanics in the Seventeenth Century

speaker: Patricia Radelet-de Grave (Université Catholique de Louvain)

abstract: This second part of the minicourse of history of mechanics will be dedicated to a period going from 1585, date of publication of the first works of Stevin to the publication of the Horologium by Huygens in 1673. The point of view will be rather different since we will be concerned with the “new science”.

The best known protagonists will be Simon Stevin, Grégoire de Saint-Vincent, Galileo Galilei, Gilles Personne de Roberval, René Descartes, Jan Ciermans and Christiaan Huygens ...

Some arguments will be, the principle of relativity, the conservation laws, the problem of collisions, the inclined plane and the law of composition of forces, the beginnings of the study of the motion of the pendulum, the beginnings of the quarrel about the vis viva, the law of fall.

There will be a course in the morning and in the afternoon we will read and comment together some texts relative to the argument of the morning.
