The Scientific Revolutions of the 16th and 17th Centuries

seminar: Galileo's 'Astronomical Operations' and the 'Libration of the Moon'. Observational and theoretical activities in his later year

speaker: Giancarlo Truffa

abstract: Galileo's fame as astronomer is strictly connected to his 'Sidereus Nuncius' and 'Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari' written in a great effort to establish himself as the leader in this field between 1609 and 1613. But his interest in astronomy continued until the last days of his life. He carried on his observations despite the frequent problems with his health and suggested and sponsored new observations done by his pupils, in particular Benedetto Castelli and Vincenzo Renieri. He also left some paper like the 'Astronomical Operations' and the writings on the libration of the Moon where his will to continue his researches are clearly testified. The steps of this less known part of the intellectual biography of Galileo will be reconsidered based on the survived witnesses, manuscripts and letters.
