It has been a little over sixty years since A. Renyi published his famous article on the dynamics of number expansions, in which he laid the foundations for the study of many different types of number expansions, including the continued fraction expansion, by viewing them as generated by a dynamical system. In this way, he initiated the application of tools from ergodic theory, the branch of mathematics that deals with the long term average behaviour of a system and has its roots in statistical physics, to problems in number theory.
This topic today is still a vibrant one, with recent contributions from many world-renowned mathematicians. It is the aim of this workshop to celebrate these successful sixty years by bringing together active researchers in the field from many different parts of the world to exchange ideas and create new directions. Amongst the invited speakers we have experts with diverse focuses and backgrounds, which will ensure a lively discussion and flow of ideas.
