An Interdisciplinary Workshop on Mathematical Methods in Biomedical Imaging and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

15 October 2007 - 19 October 2007

The main aim of this Workshop is to facilitate scientific collaboration in the interface between Mathematics, Medical Imaging and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy, thus, to promote new ideas and research at the frontiers of interdisciplinary studies. This will be achieved by bringing together leading experts and practitioners. The topics of the Workshop will include, but are not limited to, mathematical aspects and practical problems in: 1.Mathematics for image reconstruction. 2.Mathematical problems, models and methods in biomedical imaging technologies 2.A.X-ray computerized tomography (CT); 2.B.Optical tomography; 2.C.Phase contrast CT; 2.D.Electron microscopy. 3.Mathematical methods and applications in discrete tomography. 4.Mathematical problems, models and methods in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) 4.A.Optimization methods in IMRT; 4.B.Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT); 4.C.Adaptive IMRT; 4.D.Intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT). The above topics cover some of the current major technologies for the diagnostic and therapeutic medicine and biology research. The aims of the Workshop are: A.To identify important research direction and opportunities in mathematics induced by problems coming from imaging applications and radiation planning problems; B.To promote cooperation that will lead to mathematically-based better solution of practical problems in biomedical imaging and in IMRT; C.To encourage communications and promote collaborations between mathematicians and scientists from these fields of applications
