Structures of the mechanics of complex bodies

seminar: Quantum Foundations of the dynamics of structured bodies

speaker: Jan Slawianowski (Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences)

abstract: It is well-known that on the fundamental level of atoms and molecules the quantum-mechanical description must be used.Unlike this, on the macroscopic level of continua and material sciene one uses purely clasical terms: everything quantum-like, microscopic and non-homogeneous is smoothed and smeared-out according to to the homogenization paradigm. Our aim is to formulate and discuss the approach to structured bodies on the nano- and micro- level, taking seriously into account the quantum background of phenomena. The dynamics of small structure elements in the atomic, molecular and also supramolecular scale will be described in terms of quantum models on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups , with the special stress on the affine group and its subgroups.Consequences for the large-scale phenomena will be discused. Some attention will be paid to the intriguing problem of the overlap between quantum and classical level. The specific convolution of these two ranges of phenomena is characteristic for the considered physical scale. Quite independently on the study of material properties, this overlap is interesting also from the point of view of the very foundations of quanta (decoherence, measurement, quasiclasical asymptotics, etc.)
