Modelling and Control of Physical Networks

On boundary feedback control in networks of conservation laws

speaker: Georges Bastin (CESAME (Université Catholique de Louvain))

abstract: We are concerned with networks of conservation laws which are described by hyperbolic partial differential equations, with an independent time variable and an independent space variable on a finite interval. For these systems, the boundary control problem is the problem of designing control actions in order to guarantee that the solution of the Cauchy problem converges to a desired steady state. In order to solve the problem, we consider the system diagonalised in the Riemann coordinates. We present a strict Lyapunov function, the derivative of which can be made strictly negative definite by an appropriate choice of the boundary controls. The control can be implemented as a feedback of the state only measured at the boundaries. The considered class of networks has a wide range of engineering applications including for instance networks of gas flow pipe-lines or fluid models for road traffic networks. In this talk, the control design is illustrated with various applications to water level and flow control in networks of open-channels and navigable waterways.
