abstract: A van der Waals type interfacial energy is added to the bulk energy of a mixture, or to that of a thin film. As the microstructure, or film thickness decreases to 0, the resulting asymptotic behavior depends on the strength of the higher order perturbation that was introduced. The case of dimensional reduction is more involved than that of homogenization and leads, in some regimes, to non-local models in the limit.
