Many-body theory of inhomogeneous superfluids

course: Motion of a small object in superfluid helium

speaker: Carlo Ferruccio Barenghi (School of Mathematics, University of Newcastle, UK)

abstract: Recently, the technique of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has been implemented with success in superfluid helium. The PIV technique, based on tracing the motion of small, micron size particles using lasers, has great potential in the study of superfluid turbulence. To interpret the PIV data, however, it is necessary to understand the interaction of small particles with the normal fluid component, the superfluid components and with the quantised vortices. The aim of these lectures is to describe recent theoretical and numerical results concerning this problem.
