ERC Workshop on Optimal Transportation and Applications

On Gradient Structures and Geodesic Convexity for Energy-reaction-diffusion Systems and Markov Chains

speaker: Alexander Mielke (WIAS Berlin and Humboldt University Berlin)

abstract: We show that reaction-diffusion systems satisfying a detailed-balance condition can be formulated in a natural way as a gradient system for the relative entropy. We also consider time-continuous Markov chains and quantum-mechanical systems as Hamiltonian systems with a dissipation driven by entropy. We address the analytical difficulties in generalizing the metric concepts from scalar conservation problems to general systems. Some results concerning geodesic lambda-convexity are provided.
