Hamiltonian Perturbation Theory: Separatrix Splitting, Theory and Applications

Anisotropy of the splitting of separatrices at multiple resonances

speaker: Jean-Pierre Marco (IMJ-PRG Université Paris 6)

abstract: Using normal forms at multiple resonances for nearly integrable systems, we will prove that the splitting of separatrices of hyperbolic tori exhibits an anisotropic behavior. When the system is analytic, some splitting directions are (at most) exponentially small with respect to the size of the perturbation, while other ones are (at least) polynomially large. Some heuristic consequences will be given on the expected probability of crossing or exchange of simple resonances at a double resonance point.
