60 years of dynamics and number expansions

Optimal expansions in non-integer bases

speaker: Martijn de Vries (Fons Vitae, Amsterdam)

abstract: An optimal expansion is a representation of a real number obeying a certain ‘best approximation’-property of the partial sums of this expansion. We show that, depending on the base of the representation, either all real numbers have an optimal expansion, or the set of numbers with an optimal expansion is a nowhere dense null set. The results presented are based on joint work with K. Dajani, V. Komornik and P. Loreti.
