The Scientific Revolutions of the 16th and 17th Centuries

Pappus' Collection and the European rediscovery and reconstruction of Greek mathematics

speaker: Alexander Jones (Department of Classics, University of Toronto)

abstract: Though lmost unknown before A.D. 1500, Pappus' Collection was more influential in the 16th and 17th centuries as a stimulus to new mathematical work than any other surviving work of Greek mathematics, partly because of the things that it contains, but partly because of the things that it leaves out, which challenged mathematicians to "reconstruct" the lost methods of antiquity.
