Uncertainty in hearing

speaker: Hans Martin Reimann (Universitat Bern)

abstract: In the inner ear acoustic signals are transformed into neuronal impulses. Classical physiological experiments reveal the invariance of this process under the action of the affine group. A detailed study of the invariance properties leads to an uncertainty principle in acoustics. It is shown that the basilar membrane filter can be described by the extremal functions (coherent states) associated to this uncertainty principle.
