Una giornata per la matematica is our contribution to the celebration of Pi Day. Initially an American tradition, but increasingly more common world-wide, Pi Day is held on 14th of March (or 3/14 in the U.S. month/day date format), since 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant digits of π.
We mean this celebration as an opportunity to remind ourselves of the centrality of mathematics, both in academic research and in society at large. In doing this we aim to do justice to the playful nature of mathematics. Hence the programme for the day will be two-tiered. We will begin with research presentations by the research groups of the Centro di Ricerca Matematica "Ennio De Giorgi" and continue with presentations which are aimed at wider academic (not necessarily mathematical) audience. Then the celebration will continue with a popular lecture by Marco LiCalzi which is intended for a broad non-academic audience. The lecture will be followed by a screening of the film Pi at the Cineclub Arsenale. (Details of the popular part of the programme are available at: http://www.sns.it/didattica/scienze/menunews/convegni/anniprecedenti/20132014/matematica314)
